Using the Rock Island Public Library

Ways that Augustana students can use resources from the Rock Island Public Library

Getting a library card

Students living in on campus housing need to provide their student ID and their student schedule for student card registration. They can show the RI Public Library employee their schedule from their phone; it does not have to be printed out.

Students who live off campus need to provide a photo ID and proof of a Rock Island address (mail, insurance card, voter's registration) so that they can obtain a regular Rock Island Public Library card.

Faculty and staff who live in Rock Island would also need to obtain a regular library card by providing a photo ID and proof of a Rock Island address.

The Rock Island Public Library (RIPL) offers books, computer access by appointment, Wi-Fi, passes to local museums, music, movies, and online streaming. Curbside pickup is encouraged at all RIPL locations.

The Rock Island Public Library building is open, with COVID-19 precautions, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Masks are required
  • Social distance
  • Grab and Go services
  • Computer appointments
  • Curbside pick up available

RIPL offers book bundles. Choose a category, call 309-989-5450, and tell them your choice. You will receive five items per bundle.

Categories include:

  1. Children's picture books, chapter books, or non-fiction
  2. Teen chapter books, graphic novels, or manga
  3. Adult fiction, mysteries, non-fiction, audio, or large print
  4. DVDs, feature films, documentaries, or kids DVDs

For the Mobile Library, RIPL is only offering curbside pickup and wireless access. There is no public entry to the mobile library. Patrons cannot browse, so the materials onboard are only handled by staff. Users call the phone number on our outdoor sign and we provide bagged items that have been checked out to their account, load it into their car or lay it out to be picked up by the person walking up. We have an outdoor bin for returns that we bag up and seal. All of our staff wear masks and routinely sanitize the bookmobile. We typically are not allowing our staff to be handed anything except if we need to see ID for a library card registration. Our mobile library has fiction, YA materials, DVDs and audio books.
