Scandinavian Studies

This ACRL guide collects "scholarly resources in Scandinavian Studies, including Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The resources organized here are all freely available and have undergone a selection and evaluation process." It is important to note that this guide is originally intended for librarians, but may be useful for students and scholars as well.

"Handrit.org is a joint electronic catalogue of manuscripts preserved in the National and University Library of Iceland (Landsbókasafn Íslands – Háskólabókasafn), the Árni Magnússon Institute in Reykjavík (Stofnun Árna Magnússonar í íslenskum fræðum) and the Arnamagnæan Institute in Copenhagen (Den Arnamagnæanske Samling)," as well as records of manuscripts in other Scandinavian repositories. The digitized manuscripts "are primarily Icelandic, but there are also important collections of Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Faroese material, as well as around 100 manuscripts of continental provenance."

The History of Nordic Women's Literature, a digital edition of the print book with the same title, traces the history of women writers in the Nordic regions from the 14th century to the present day. Each writer is documented with her own biographic entry.

"The Icelandic Saga Database is an online resource dedicated to publishing the Sagas of the Icelanders — a large body of medieval Icelandic literature. The sagas are prose histories describing events that took place amongst the Norse and Celtic inhabitants of Iceland during the period of the Icelandic Commonwealth in the 10th and 11th centuries CE."

"The Icelandic Saga Map is intended as a resource to guide specialists and non-specialists alike around the Íslendingasögur from a spatial perspective. On it, places named in the sagas are hyper-linked to their occurrences in the saga texts. There are also links to images of places and to other sources of information concerning them (e.g. problems with respect to their identification in modern-day Icelandic landscapes, details about archaeological excavations)."

"This page indexes all of the content at sacred-texts related to Icelandic lore, including the Eddas and Sagas. There are also modern retellings of Northern lore."

The National Library of Sweden offers a limited amount of their collections in a digital format in English; there are additional digital collections available in Swedish.

"Project Runeberg (runeberg.org) is a volunteer effort to create free electronic editions of classic Nordic (Scandinavian) literature and make them openly available over the Internet."

"Royal Danish Library is an institution controlled by the Danish Ministry of Culture. We provide services and communication of knowledge, and we preserve the Danish cultural heritage for posterity."

ScanDiaSyn is a collaborative project to " systematically map and study the syntactic variation across the Scandinavian dialect continuum."

"The Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study is an academic association representing scholars, institutions, and individuals across the globe who are interested in the history, language, and cultures of the Nordic region: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Greenland, Sápmi, and The Faroe Islands."

The Swedish Literature Bank, a collaborative digital library created by several Swedish libraries and institutions, is known for their "reliable digital versions of Swedish classics. While publishing canonical works by Swedish authors, The Swedish Literature Bank also focuses on neglected authors and genres, effectively establishing a set of ‘minor classics’ alongside the canonical works."
