Welcome! This subject guide highlights important research and language-learning resources for the study of German at Augustana. Whether you're a major or taking a single class in the German department, you should find something useful here.

This box highlights some recommended started resources for German language learning and German studies.

Research Articles:

MLA International Bibliography Produced by the Modern Language Association, this bibliography dates back to the 1920s and contains over 2.2 million citations. Coverage is international and subjects include literature, language and linguistics, folklore, literary theory & criticism, dramatic arts, as well as the historical aspects of printing and publishing.
JSTOR JSTOR is home to over 12 million sources in a wide variety of formats across 75 academic disciplines, making it a helpful resource for finding scholarly secondary materials as well as primary materials (including art, news articles, historical pamphlets, and more). Notable features include their collections searching, their "search within" function, and their organizing tools/workspace.
Academic Search Complete This multidisciplinary database offers more than 8,500 full-text periodicals, including more than 7,300 peer-reviewed journals, and indexing and abstracts for more than 12,500 journals and over 13,200 publications including books, reports, and conference proceedings. The database features PDF content going back as far as 1887, with the majority of full text titles in native (searchable) PDF format.

News Articles

Nexis Uni (Formerly LexisNexis) Nexis Uni, the successor of LexisNexis Academic, provides full-text access to over 15,000 news, business, and legal sources.The outstanding news coverage includes deep archives and up-to-the-minute stories in national and regional newspapers, wire services, broadcast transcripts, international news, and non-English language news services.
NewsBank NewsBank provides a comprehensive collection of reliable news sources covering a wide array of topics and issues including 12,000 total sources with 300+ Illinois publications and 200 countries represented along with diverse news media such as trade journals, video, audio files, broadcast transcripts.
Zeitschriftendatenbank (ZDB) "In the ZDB, you will find serial titles, newspapers, databases, yearbooks etc., in short, everything that was and is being published periodically in printed or electronic form and that is available in German and Austrian institutions. On the European level access to digitized newspapers will be constantly expanded." The database is also available in English.

Dictionaries & Language Reference Materials

Beolingus Beolingus is an online German dictionary managed by the University of Technology - Chemnitz.
Dict.CC "The goal of dict.cc is to make it possible to share your vocabulary knowledge with the world. This is the main difference from other translation services - every user is encouraged to contribute to the English-German dictionary by adding and/or verifying translation suggestions. The resulting vocabulary database can be downloaded and used for free."

Language Learning Resources

COERLL German Resources COERLL, an open-access and open educational resources initiative, offers free language learning and support materials in a range of languages. This links to their German learning resources, which include the Deutsch im Blick online textbook linked above.
Goethe Institut German Language Resources The Goethe Institut has "developed a range of free media to help" language learners, ranging from "apps with learning materials to videos, podcasts and games." The Goethe Institut also promotes cultural exchanges through its many projects related to German culture.
DW Learn German DW Learn German is a free online platform with lessons and activities for language learners at any level.
