John Henry Hauberg (1869-1955) was a prominent resident of Rock Island whose papers are held by Augustana's Special Collections. Hauberg was interested in local history, including Black Hawk and the Black Hawk War of 1832, local Indigenous history and culture (primarily related to the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes and Native American trade), and the Lakota prison at Camp McClellan. His papers include extensive materials on those topics. The link above goes to the finding aid, which describes the contents of the Hauberg papers. The Olson-Brandelle collection is a collection of Indigenous American artwork, particularly pottery by Indigenous artists from the American Southwest. The link above leads to a catalog in book form describing the artwork and its historical and cultural significance; the catalog is available for check-out at Tredway Library. To see the collection itself, you can visit Tredway Library in person, where many pieces are on display on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors. A collection of books for researching the artwork is also housed at Tredway Library, on the 2nd floor.

The Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island is near the location of Saukenuk, home of the Sauk leader Black Hawk. The John Hauberg Museum of Native American Life, which is located at the historic site, interprets the story of the Sauk and Meskwaki people.
