Special Collections

Plan Your Visit

Special Collections is open to all researchers, including members of the Augustana campus and wider community. To view materials, patrons are welcome to stop by our Reading Room during open hours or book an appointment outside of our open hours. We can also provide research consultations by phone, email, and video chat. Researchers are encouraged to search our collections for relevant materials prior to making a research visit, in order to maximize time spent in the Reading Room.

Special Collections is closed for all campus-wide holidays and closed in observance of the fall and winter Symposium Days and spring Celebration of Learning.  See the current academic calendar for a full listing of breaks and campus holidays. If you are visiting from off campus, you may also be interested viewing our campus map.

What to Expect

Special Collections strives to be a welcoming and flexible environment. The nature of our materials, however, means that we do have some unique procedures and policies.

  • For each visit to Special Collections, you will be asked to fill out a registration card. You will be asked to provide your full name, contact information, affiliation, and research question/topic.
  • Special Collections is a closed-stack, non-circulating facility. Requested materials will be retrieved by staff and must be used in the Reading Room.
  • To preserve the materials, researchers are required to follow the Special Collections Reading Room Policies.
