Reading Room Policies

Please help us preserve our materials by respecting these policies:

  • Clean, dry hands are essential. Please wash your hands (restrooms located behind the stairwell) and refrain from using hand lotion.
  • Leave all bags, coats, etc. in the cubbies or on the hangers by the entrance
  • Food and beverages are not allowed in the reading room. Covered, closed cups and bottles may be left in the cubbies, but please step outside the reading room if you need to have a drink. Please discard all gum, cough drops, hard candies, etc. prior to entering the reading room.
  • Pencils only! We have plenty available at the desk if you need one.
  • Work with one box/folder/item at a time. When removing a folder or item from a manuscript box, mark the location with an “Out” card until you have returned the item to its original spot.
  • Handle with care. Many of our materials are fragile and easily damaged, even if they look like they are in good condition. Here are some basic handling guidelines:
    • Turn pages slowly by their edges.
    • Keep all items on or above the table at all times.
    • Keep all items in their original order and orientation.
    • Open books slowly and gently. If you start to feel resistance before the cover is fully open, please stop and ask for help.
    • Use only acid-free paper bookmarks to flag interesting material.
    • If cushions or supports are provided, please leave the item resting on the supports at all times.
    • Wear cotton gloves when handling photographs.
  • Note paper and laptops are allowed on the tables.
  • Turn flash off before taking photos.
  • To request scans, please consult the staff person at the desk.
