This is a selection of openly licensed textbooks that has been created for free use in courses. These resources may be adopted for use as classroom text, modified to create new texts, or used as a supplemental learning tool to aid in understanding key concepts.

U.S. Government and Politics Resources

    An open website that offers mini, chronological lessons on key events in U.S. History. The site is licensed under a Creative Commons CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0 Unported license. 
  • is a national clearinghouse of educational resources that are made openly available. Unless otherwise noted, the site is licensed under a Creative Commons CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0 Unported License. 
  • contains thousands of pages covering a wide array of topics related to U.S. History. Many of the historic documents are in the public domain. All other items are individually licensed. 

Human Rights Resources

  • Culture and Human Rights (Module) - SUNY Global Workforce Project
    This module of the Global Workforce Curriculum was created to help prepare undergraduate students to compete effectively in the global economy, by increasing their global understanding and skills. The module contains six complete, one-hour lesson plans for teaching on culture and human rights.
  • Human Rights Reports - U.S. Department of State
    The State Department annually posts country reports on human rights practices, which cover internationally recognized individual, civil, political, and worker rights as laid out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Included in this section are a variety of resources provided by the U.S. Government, which may be of use in political science coursework. As a general rule, most works created by U.S. Government employees as part of their employment are considered to be in the public domain, but always be sure to check the licenses and permissions for each resource you intend to use.
